A wide variety of connectors and cables exist in today's electronics world. Most of those cables are cheaper to buy, rather than to make them your self. But sometimes you will have to improvise when a suitable cable for the job at hand is not available. Other situations prohibit the use of "off the shelf cables", like network cables or when longer cables are required.
When you are designing or trouble shooting circuits, like I often do, it's also good to have the signal descriptions on connectors at hand. That's why I included this chapter on my site.
